Hendersonville Voters Take Elections Seriously
Fri, Nov 14, 2008
When Mayor Scott Foster ran unopposed for a second term as mayor of Hendersonville, I doubt he expected to get every single vote. Surely there would be some write-in votes cast for various community members.
But I somehow doubt he expected to lose votes to Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Kerry Collins, Dave Ramsey, & Mike Ditka.
A total of 489 Hendersonville voters cast a vote for a write-in candidate. Most of these were at least for real, living people who are Hendersonville residents… people like Pam Tidwell and Robert Jennings–who were both running for other offices.
Some write-in voters decided the city needs a celebrity touch, and wrote down their favorite athletes or media personalities (Steve McNair got a vote, which has to make him feel good–hey Steve, not everybody has forgotten you!).
Then it gets really weird. Two people voted for Mickey Mouse. Tony Soprano got a vote, as did some guy’s dog (”my dog”). Oh, and Snoopy, Homer Simpson, Winnie The Pooh, & John Q Public.
My personal favorite write-in vote for Hendersonville Mayor? “Satan Himself.”
Now, I would like to meet the man (or woman) who would rather turn the reins of the city over to the devil than let the current human mayor have another crack at it. How much do you have to hate this city to wish Satan were mayor? Or wait… maybe it speaks less about how much they hate Hendersonville and more about how much they love Satan.
If I had a time machine, I would definitely go back in time and whip up the city into a frenzy with a massive write-in campaign for Satan For Mayor… or maybe the Bell Witch. What do you seriously think would happen if somehow an unopposed mayor lost to a non-human entity or fictional character because of a write in campaign? Man, it would easily be two or three days of some of the most hilarious news coverage ever.
Well, there’s always the 2012 election. I might have to start the grassroots thing now, though. Who’s with me?!
